Movies. Such as:

  • Singin’ In The Rain – Gene Kelly  at his sauvest, Debbie Reynolds at her cutest, Cyd Charisse at her sexiest and Donald O’Connor at his funniest.
  • The Princess Bride – Just. Plain. Awesome.
  • Gentlemen Prefer Blondes – Sassy and witty Jane Russell and sparkling Marilyn Monroe directed by Howard Hawks.
  • Brown Sugar - Taye Diggs. Sanaa Lathan. Hip hop.
  • The Life Aquatic, Grosse Point Blank, High Fidelity, Dinner Rush, How To Marry A Millionaire, Love & Sex

Books. Such as:

  • Maynard & Jennica by Rudolph Delson -  A very funny and self-assured debut
  • Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides – I just read this for the first time and was blown away by its greatness. I urge everyone to read it
  • The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay by Michael Chabon – It made me cry, but then most things do. It did justify my love for graphic novels all over again
  • Y: The Last Man by Brian K. Vaughan and Pia Guerra. Great story and strong fantastic women characters.
  • Preacher by Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon, London Is The Best City In America by Laura Dave, Prep by Curtis Sittenfeld, The Position by Meg Wolitzer, Purple Hibiscus by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Something Borrowed by Emily Giffin, The Girls’ Guide To Hunting and Fishing by Melissa Bank

Telly. I love telly. Such as:

  • Buffy the Vampire Slayer – often copied, never bettered. Full of the most irreverent dialogue and kickassiest (?) women on TV. Plus Spike.
  • The Wire – I know, I know. Sigh. I cannot lie, it’s the business. Awesome from conception and the execution is almost flawless. Jimmy McNulty/Dominic West has an air of sexgod about him, too.
  • How I Met Your Mother, Spaced, Arrested Development, Angel, Gilmore Girls – Smart women talking fast, The Simpsons, Flight of the Conchords, Felicity, Futurama, 30 Rock, Firefly, Deadwood

Other things I like:

  • Fastidious punctuation, spelling and grammar
  • Paul Rudd
  • Chiwetel Ejiofor
  • Taye Diggs
  • Paul Rudd
  • Ryan Gosling
  • Coffee cake
  • Fried egg sandwiches
  • Nail varnish
  • Star Trek
  • Boris Kodjoe

Was Love & Sex a deliberate omission from your movie list? Go on, I can take it… I feel like I don’t even know you! :-)

If I were to list all my faves, there’d be no room for anything else! But as a concession to you, I will add Love & Sex. Here’s a little reference for you – Ned and Nedina. :-P

Well wems, I have Chewy Ejiofor, Spaced and fried egg sandwiches in there. Isn’t that enough? And I’m British, and have talent, so… Tell you what, if you can name 6 things that should be on this list and I agree with you, then up they go. Otherwise, sucks to you :-P

PS: No Simon Pegg vehicles – already covered by the genius that is Spaced.

you dope. I accept your challenge and your weak acceptance of truly superior british talent which you have no appreciation for. pfft.

    Green Wing
    red dwarf (the early stuff)
    Teachers
    doctor who
    the office…!
    father ted

    films:
    28 days later
    the great escape
    lock stock…

look, at the end of the day, i’m one person, and as much as i’d like to big-up all of british talent here…i can’t be arsed. laters.

You entertainment simpleton. I fart in your general direction. That was Monty Python, by the by. It knocks all of your suggestions into a cocked hat. So, in response to your trifling suggestions, I say this:
Green Wing was only good for two things – Julian Rhind-Tutt and Michelle Gomez. At a push, Dr Statham.
Red Dwarf – you nullify your argument by making allowances for the crappy later series.
Doctor Who – I concede fully. Terrifying the youth of Britain in fine tradition since 1656. Or was it 1963? I forget which.
The Office – very, very, good. But I’m not a huge fan, you see.
Father Ted – very, very good. But not much of a die-hard fan.
As for your film selection, I assume you jest. Because I’m laughing. Oh, and The Great Escape is American. Just FYI.

yeah, i know – that was a test.
    well done, you passed!
now that you’ve shot me down with your superior intellect, i shall refrain from poking holes in your tighly woven spiel….
    blog on, yorubagirl, blog on…!
